Ingredients

450 g (15 oz) spinach

200 g paneer, cut into cubes

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 onion, finely chopped

½
green chilli, chopped

1
½
tablespoons Patak’s Jalfrezi Paste

2 tablespoons cream

salt, to taste

fresh chopped coriander, for garnish

Methods

Wash the spinach and put in a large pan with a lid and place on a medium heat. The water on the leaves will help the spinach to wilt. Stir well and remove from the heat once it has wilted.

Allow to cool and squeeze out the moisture.

In a separate pan add the vegetable oil and place on a medium heat. Add the cumin seeds. Once they begin to sizzle add the garlic, green chilli and the onion.

Once the onions turn golden brown add the Patak’s Jalfrezi Paste. Sprinkle in some water if the mixture begins to stick. Roughly chop the cooled spinach and stir into the pan.

After 1 minute add the paneer. Sprinkle in some more water if required.

Allow to cook for a few more minutes, before stirring in the cream and checking the seasoning and adjusting if necessary. Sprinkle with fresh chopped coriander before serving.

Tastes great served with hot naan bread.

NASA mulls plan to drag asteroid into moon’s orbit

Who says NASA has lost interest in the moon? Along with rumours of a hovering lunar base, there are reports that the agency is considering a proposal to capture an asteroid and drag it into the moon’s orbit.

Researchers with the Keck Institute for Space Studies in California have confirmed that NASA is mulling over their plan to build a robotic spacecraft to grab a small asteroid and place it in high lunar orbit. The mission would cost about $2.6 billion – slightly more than NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover – and could be completed by the 2020s.

For now, NASA’s only official plans for human spaceflight involve sending a crewed capsule, called Orion, around the moon. The Obama administration has said it also wants to send astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid. One proposed target, chosen because of its scientific value and favourable launch windows for a rendezvous, is a space rock called 1999 AO10. The mission would take about half a year, exposing astronauts to long-term radiation beyond Earth’s protective magnetic field and taking them beyond the reach of any possible rescue.

Robotically bringing an asteroid to the moon instead would be a more attractive first step, the Keck researchers conclude, because an object orbiting the moon would be in easier reach of robotic probes and maybe even humans.

Full Article→

Photographer Imagines What World Cities Would Look Like Without Lights

French photographer Thierry Cohen wants to show you what the cities might look like if they went dark on a clear day, and if the photographer focused on bringing out the stars. His project Darkened Cities shows recognizable cityscapes in darkness under the night sky.

To create the images, Cohen first traveled to locations that are untainted by the light pollution of large urban areas, capturing beautiful night shots of the Milky Way floating overhead.

He then combined these photographs with manipulated photographs of various cities (e.g. San Francisco, New York City, Tokyo, Rio de Janerio) to complete the effect.

Opportunity Rover Finds Mars Minerals that Formed in Life-Friendly Water

image 1: Opportunity image of light, flat rocks containing clay and mysterious darker rocks jutting through them. NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell Univ./ USGS/Modesto Junior College

While attention has been focused on the Mars rover Curiosity, NASA’s other active Mars rover, Opportunity, has quietly been going about its business and may have stumbled across an intriguing new geologic puzzle. Opportunity has begun examining ancient clays on Mars that would have formed in the presence of water with neutral acidity, a condition favorable for life as we know it.

“This is our first glimpse ever at an ancient Mars where conditions would be suitable for life,” said astronomer Steve Squyres of Cornell University, the lead scientist for Opportunity’s mission, here at the American Geophysical Union conference on Dec 4.

Previous minerals that Opportunity and its defunct twin Spirit had found thus far on Mars would have required extremely harsh conditions to form, something akin to battery acid, and not very conducive to life. The clays that the rover is now exploring would have been created billions of years earlier in water with a neutral pH. “These clays point to water you could drink,” said Squyres.

Since it landed on Mars in 2004, Opportunity has roved more than 22 miles. After nine years on Mars, the rover is getting a bit old, with a squeaky right front wheel and a creaky arm joint, though is overall in good condition. Last year, the probe arrived at Endeavor crater, where it discovered the most unambiguous evidence for water on ancient Mars ever found.

Scientists directed Opportunity to Endeavor crater to study the clays, which had been spotted earlier from orbit. Roving around one of the half-buried rims of the crater, Opportunity found a small hill that Squyres described as the “sweet spot” where clays are known to be present. The rover took photos showing two types of rocks.

The dominant material is light-toned, flat-lying, and easily eroded by Martian wind. This is the rock that contains the clays and shows a chemistry typical of Martian material. But Opportunity also found a fin sticking up through the dominant rocks made of another material that is dark, grey, and more resistant to erosion.

“What we have stumbled upon is what is turning out to be one of the most delightful geologic puzzles we have ever found on Mars,” said Squyres.

When they drove up to the fin, the science team found it covered in a dense concentration of spherical bubbles quite similar looking to the iron-containing Martian “blueberries” that Opportunity has seen before. But when they looked at the chemical composition of these spheres, scientists found they contained no iron.

“It’s something totally different, and I’ve started calling them ‘newberries’,” said Squyres.

The team doesn’t yet know what these newberries are made of and will spend the next few months investigating them. They could be mineral concretions, impact ejecta spherules, or volcanic hailstones. Squyres said that researchers will also examine the clays to determine what conditions on early Mars would have been like. He said many questions remained and Opportunity had a lot of work ahead of it.

“It’s like we’ve been exploring Mars for nine years, and now Mars has given us a final exam,” said Squyres.

The Brightest Galaxies in the Universe Were Invisible… Until Now

image 1: Hubble images of six of the starburst galaxies first found by ESA’s Herschel Space Observatory (Keck data shown below each in blue)
image 2: A representation of the distribution of nearly 300 starbursts in one 1.4 x 1.4 degree field of view.

Many of the brightest, most actively star-forming galaxies in the Universe were actually undetectable by Earth-based observatories, hidden from view by thick clouds of opaque dust and gas. Thanks to ESA’s Herschel space observatory, which views the Universe in infrared, an enormous amount of these “starburst” galaxies have recently been uncovered, allowing astronomers to measure their distances with the twin telescopes of Hawaii’s W.M. Keck Observatory. What they found is quite surprising: at least 767 previously unknown galaxies, many of them generating new stars at incredible rates.

Although nearly invisible at optical wavelengths these newly-found galaxies shine brightly in far-infrared, making them visible to Herschel, which can peer through even the densest dust clouds. Once astronomers knew where the galaxies are located, they were able to target them with Hubble and, most importantly, the two 10-meter Keck telescopes — the two largest optical telescopes in the world.

By gathering literally hundreds of hours of spectral data on the galaxies with the Keck telescopes, estimates of their distances could be determined as well as their temperatures and how often new stars are born within them.

“While some of the galaxies are nearby, most are very distant; we even found galaxies that are so far that their light has taken 12 billion years to travel here, so we are seeing them when the Universe was only a ninth of its current age,” said Dr. Caitlin Casey, Hubble fellow at the UH Manoa Institute for Astronomy and lead scientist on the survey. “Now that we have a pretty good idea of how important this type of galaxy is in forming huge numbers of stars in the Universe, the next step is to figure out why and how they formed.”

The galaxies, many of them observed as they were during the early stages of their formation, are producing new stars at a rate of 100 to 500 a year — with a mass equivalent of several thousand Suns — hence the moniker “starburst” galaxy. By comparison the Milky Way galaxy only births one or two Sun-mass stars per year.

The reason behind this explosion of star formation in these galaxies is unknown, but it’s thought that collisions between young galaxies may be the cause.

Another possibility is that galaxies had much more gas and dust during the early Universe, allowing for much higher star formation rates than what’s seen today.

“It’s a hotly debated topic that requires details on the shape and rotation of the galaxies before it can be resolved,” said Dr. Casey.

Still, the discovery of these “hidden” galaxies is a major step forward in understanding the evolution of star formation in the Universe.

“Our study confirms the importance of starburst galaxies in the cosmic history of star formation. Models that try to reproduce the formation and evolution of galaxies will have to take these results into account.”
– Dr. Caitlin Casey, Hubble fellow at the UH Manoa Institute for Astronomy

“For the first time, we have been able to measure distances, star formation rates, and temperatures for a brand new set of 767 previously unidentified galaxies,” said Dr. Scott Chapman, a co-author on the studies. “The previous similar survey of distant infrared starbursts only covered 73 galaxies. This is a huge improvement.”

The papers detailing the results were published today online in the Astrophysical Journal.

Verse 3:
             C/G
Who kicked a hole in the sky
       E/C Am Fmaj7
So the heavens would cry over me?
              C/G
Who stole the soul from the sun
     E/C Am Fmaj7
In a world come undone at the seams?

Chorus:
             C/G Bb9
Let there be love

Let there be love
             C/G Bb9
Let there be love
             Am Fmaj7
Let there be love
             C/G Bb9
Let there be love
             Am Fmaj7
Let there be love
             C/G Bb9
Let there be love
             Am Fmaj7
Let there be love
             C/G Bb9
Let there be love
